Being Salman Khan

“It is Salman Khan who makes his movies a success, not the other way around,” said Mumbai-based banking executive Shrishti Sinha, 23. “If it is a Salman Khan movie, people will go for it, no questions asked,” said Shobhit Dandia, 28, a corporate finance executive working in Mumbai. Bangalore-based film buff and property specialist Arun Goel, 57, spelled out: “It’s Salman Khan people go to watch. The film – quality, story, execution – is secondary. People go expecting brand Salman to deliver something, which he does, consistently. They don’t expect any surprises from him.”

A pan-India appeal, a larger than life persona – he doesn’t have an attitude, he is the attitude, on screen and in real life, a very clearly mass-targeted brand, Salman Khan has delivered four straight Bollywood box office hits in recent times. The latest, Ek Tha Tiger, is already his biggest ever and second in eight days only to Aamir Khan’sRs. 200 crore-plus superhit, 3 Idiots. Ek That Tiger crossed the Rs. 100 crore mark in five days, the fastest-ever Bollywood record.
“Brand Salman evokes strong responses. You just can’t be lukewarm about him. He appeals across age groups and socio-economic strata,” said brand specialist Sharda Agarwal, founder-director, MarketGate Consulting. “While his appeal is mass, the more discerning are also not immune. He’s something like Thums Up. Originally targeting slightly older consumers, its appeal is nonetheless widespread.”
She pointed out that while Khan’s apparel and accessories brand, Being Human, sees the maximum pirating at the lower end of the market, it appeals even at the upper end. “People see Being Human as Salman Khan. While pirated versions abound, even an upper-end retail brand such as Cotton World – old world, wholesome – stocks Being Human.” http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/Popup/2012/8/27-08-biz7.jpg
It’s not that people ignore or make excuses for Salman Khan’s negative traits and actions. But they still connect with him because they feel he is ‘authentic’.
Ashish Mishra, head of Water and Interbrand India operations, examined brand Salman as an actor and in his socio-cultural relevance. “As a blend of reel and real personas, he is not a pure lover boy – like Rajesh Khanna, Shah Rukh Khan – nor a social crusader seething against the system, a la Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan. He does both, without a great deal of fuss. There is a resonance of his effortless, real, ‘no acting’ style with our preference for authenticity today. The good side of philanthropy is a no fuss one too. So is the childish comic side which comes across as natural.”
Within the larger socio-cultural milieu, Khan, in his lion avatar, restored the maleness of the nation which, still drawing from the West, had started accepting a world outside ‘machismo’ that “displayed cosmetic exhibitions of ‘cuteness’ and uncharacteristic breakdowns in times of pressure,” Mishra said. “And he did so in real life too. The gait, the unhurried walk, the pride-oozing physique and posture, the intimidating glare… Seeing him do all of it as a person too makes him real. Looks like with all his flaws and goodness, he is being himself, being human. Reason enough to be loved as a hero in the plastic times of today.”
At the core, brand Salman connects with consumers at an emotional level, not necessarily confined by logic. Just like brand Apple does with American consumers, who lap up every new introduction, despite pretty impressive competing alternatives.
Can such brands endure? Will Salman Khan endure? Amitabh Bachchan proved that it is possible as long as the brand stays relevant to its consumers. This could mean reinvention – something Bachchan did after a rough period of failures; and something a powerful brand such as Nokia has remained slow on – and having a presence much larger than the screen alone.

Ek Tha Tiger Blockbuster or All Time Blockbuster?

With Ek Tha Tiger already a monstrous Hit at the box office, all cinegoers have just one question in mind. ETT is Blockbuster or All Time Blockbuster? There is no specific formula for a film being Blockbuster or ATBB. But those film that attain ATBB status have stormed box office like never before and has been benchmark in coming years. Lets solve the puzzle.

First logically a film for attaining ATBB status it needs to break few Box Office Records and New Records should be a benchmark in coming days. ETT succeeds in that. Secondly the most important term is film should earn profits from each sectors, each circuits, literally everywhere. Be it distributors, exhibitors, theatres and makers literally every body should earn huge. Lastly Return on Investment (ROI) should be huge at least 100%.

Must Requirements for ATBB -

Minimum Nett Collections (Inflation Adjusted for 2012 right now) should be at least 175+ crore nett. As per Trade.

ROI(Most Important Condition) should be at least 100% or more.

Break existing Box Office Records and set new ones.

ETT has broken All Box Office Records except Lifetime Figure of 3 Idiots. Also, it has crossed 175+ cr nett cutoff mark. Only remaining point is ROI 100% or more.

Cost of ETT - Earlier makers of ETT has stated the Budget as 80 crore as predicted in our ETT Box Office Prediction Post. But after post release and marketing and publicity cost added it is now officially 90 crore. Hence, for ROI to be minimum 100% it should make double the budget of ETT. That means it should earn 180 crore Gross Amount.

Amount Recovered by ETT (Except India Theatricals) -

Satellite Right 45-50 crore (speculated)

Music and other rights 6 crore.

Overseas expected 20-25 crore Distributor Share

That means a total of  75-80 crore will be recovered except India Theatricals. So, for 100% ROI it should collect another 105 crore Distributor Share that will take total earning to 180 crore. For attaining 105 distributor share from India Theatricals, it should collect a Nett Gross of 185 crore nett at the Box Office.

Cut off mark of Ek Tha Tiger to be ATBB - Approximately 185 crore nett or more and ETT is ATBB. If Ek Tha Tiger crosses 3 Idiots Lifetime Collection it is undisputed ATBB. Cheers! Hope that answers all your queries!

Ek Tha Tiger Movie Review IV

We don’t really need to revise the promotions or hype of Ek Tha Tiger because we all know about it. So let’s get straight to the analysis of Ek Tha Tiger.

In every probability, Ek Tha Tiger is not a bad or an average movie. Rather, it is unexpectedly great and surprisingly exhilarating.

Cinema is not just about having a different or an innovative concept every-time. It is also about doing justice to your content, no matter whatever it is and Ek Tha Tiger scores in the second type. Ek Tha Tiger’s biggest win is that the movie has a well scheduled story and a thoroughly organized premises, unlike most of the movies these days. Kabir Khan’s artistic stability between commercialism and sensibilities aid the movie magnificently. Even the character sketch of Tiger being such a mechanical and under instructions spy justifies the story such accurately. Further, the title is such correctly relevant. The movie does drive some concepts from Veer Zaara and Mr. and Mrs. Smith but in totality, they remain to be just concepts.

When you talk about screenplay, Ek Tha Tiger does wonders. Kabir Khan’s execution of romantic spy thriller leaves you spellbound by the justifications, detailing of even minor script points, steadiness and computations. Another thing what I liked about Kabir Khan’s narrative is that it is very confidently linear. Some of the diminutive details are dished out and are later used in the movie which may be difficult for some viewers to connect together but keeping his class and standard of execution, Kabir Khan is definite about it and handles the whole thing with expertise.

The first half may be a little slower and there are some real scope for improvisations but it is satisfying and after the end of the entire movie, I would rather call the first half very calculative. To execute the moment of ‘fun on the run’, it’s the director’s job to first create a base or a ground for that moment and regarding this explanation, Kabir Khan’s conduct is commendable. In fact, to make a romantic thriller with complete justifications to the practicality of the protagonists, without making them a love legend or making them go anti to their respective countries and by just doing what they want to, Kabir Khan's attempt should be applauded, who has raised the bar up of very clichédly romantic term “they are in love <3 font="font"> in a modernized, practical, subtle and in very persuasive manner.

Even during the second half, in the chase sequences, the protagonists way of expressing their fondness [exhibited through slow motion gazes and exceptional background score (the thing which I loved in the movie)] is a very passionate thing of direction from Kabir Khan, which obviously is very common but not commonly this rightly done. Second half is sensationally breathtaking. The movie turns so awe-stunning here that if you are influenced to get out of the theatre in the midst of the second half, you will return back to your seat again. The content of the movie, no matter it be a tram fight or even a minor thing like some play in Dublin, i.e. (almost) everything, was demanded by the script. Kabir Khan never intends to go off track and never compromises and he is successful in the end. However, there are some drawbacks of the movie as well.

Foremost is its appeal. Ek Tha Tiger’s appeal is limited but too rooted also. It means you have to be rooted to the romance to enjoy the fun of the movie in the second half. Else, it would be too brainless or at most, just fascinating stunt sequences for you. The reason for this problem is because the genre has been misinterpreted by the audience. It’s a romantic spy thriller and not a spy thriller, there’s a difference. And according to me, the movie defends its genre.

There are two more points which according to me could have been better in the movie. Firstly, some very obvious body-double shots and secondly, the dialogues. Visible body double shots are too noticeable and spoil the mood sometimes and dialogues go down at some high script moments (like during the dance between Tiger and Zoya at the UN Peace Meet). Performances are delightful. Salman Khan is very suitable as a spy but his robotic spy personality is to look out for. It is very distinguished from all the spy characters which we have seen. Though at times he looks old, the charisma he has throughout the movie is eminent for the character. Katrina Kaif has never been this good. I guess Kabir Khan extracts the best from her because even in New York, her performance was stupendous. She surely leaves a strong mark with this movie. Ranveer Shorey and Girish Karnad are wonderful too.

Moving to technicalities, cinematography is jaw dropping-ly amazing. Editing is crisp. Action scenes are beyond the reach of any Hindi movie. It is so beautifully executed and intelligently choreographed as per the characters and situations that there are no questions raised. Music is situationally great. All the songs and their picturizations play an important role in progressing the script. Background score is suitably majestic.

Sau Bat Ki Ek Bat,

Ek Tha Tiger provides many reasons for a must watch experience. No cheesy action, no ek se ek dialogues, no clichéd love story and ofcourse, no stereotyping of Salman Khan. Ek Tha Tiger is in simple words is a Dil ki baat from the director and all his passion for the script is clearly noticeable in his direction. Clean romance, super action, marvelous execution, lively chemistry between the protagonists and significant performances make it a thumpy and an impressive romantic ride. At roughly around 2 hours and 15 minutes, the movie has tremendous repetition value too.

There has been a lot of negativity for the movie post its release and I can't help but sneer at them because the movie in no way is a letdown. You will be surprised how terrifically calculative and how calculatively terrific Ek Tha Tiger is. On the contrary, to me, it is Salman Khan’s best Eid offering so far. Also, just like 3 idiots, this is one of the only deserving highest grossers to come from the Hindi Film Industry.

it deserve 3.5 star

Salman Khan's Ek Tha Tiger roars at box office, fourth consecutive Rs 100 crore hit

MUMBAI: Bhai ka picture ka chaar ticket dena," goes a man in his late-twenties, bending into the box-office window at a single screen theatre in Mumbai's Mahim area.
The man behind the counter stamps four tickets and hands it over without batting an eyelid; he's been witness to this kind of request for the past many years - and for the past five days during which Salman Khan's debut with Yash Raj Films' (YRF's) 'Ek Tha Tiger' ('ETT') has shattered the Rs100 crore barrier in collections, as per data provided by YRF
Khan, 46, has hit bull's eye yet again, this time in the avatar of Avinash Singh Rathore, also known as Tiger. Unlike his last three blockbusters, Khan's latest—a non-typical Salman Khan action-romance flick—did not release traditionally on Eid but on Independence Day.
This is Salman's fourth Rs 100 crore in a row and his fifth big hit if one would count 'Wanted' in 2009, which fell some Rs 40 crore short of the Rs 100 crore club. Together, these five have grossed close to Rs 600 crore. And, of course, the ETT phenomenon—or rather another Salman wave—has just about only begun.
"There is an actor, a superstar and a phenomenon. Salman Khan is a phenomenon. He is beyond the film; he's an event. He takes the meaning of iconic to another level, a tsunami whose waves encompass the audience in his power. Watching ETT in a single theatre with that audience is another phenomenon," says film maker Karan Johar.

It's that connect with an audience that ranges from youth in the boondocks to the big cities that has landed him a bunch of endorsement contracts.
The brands range from Suzuki (bikes) to travel site Yatra (where Salman also has a stake); and there is Being Human, Salman's own apparel brand.
It's a streak for Salman, not too different from a similar phase another popular Bollywood actor Govinda went through, points out leading ad professional and author Santosh Desai.
"It's a phase when everyone cues into you for a different set of reasons. Khan has exaggerated playfulness, a comic-book view of turning a traditionally grim story and the audience connects with that," says Desai, who adds that the alpha male factor is (still) working fine.
Film makers and brand marketers will be wondering, though, how long Brand Salman can endure.
For one, his macho image has a lifespan. For another, controversies are not alien to Salman and a few from the past—like a decade-old hit-and-run case—could come back to take more than a little sheen off the brand.
So far, though, Salman has bounced back in style. The Being Human campaign was a masterstroke, reckons K V Sridhar, creative chief at Leo Burnett (besides the apparel brand, Being Human Foundation is an NGO focused on providing education and healthcare to those who can't afford it).
"It (Being Human) showed him as noble and likeable. So whilst on-screen he is the macho man, off-screen you see the approachable, soft side of him which as a combination works wonderfully for Brand Salman," adds Sridhar, pointing out that Being Human tshirts sell the most in B and C towns.
"In fact it's one of the most pirated brands today, which is a compliment in itself," he says. Nandini Dias, COO, Lodestar UM, a media agency, thinks with 'Being Human' Salman Khan has accomplished what no other star in India has managed so far.
"The real worth of a brand ambassador is known when people are willing to buy a product that has no other history or background except the star," says Dias.
That goodwill has been built over decades. "Salman has always had an unconditional fan following right from the beginning, irrespective of any other aspect, explains Prasoon Joshi, chairman & regional creative director for Asia Pacific, McCann Erickson.
"As far as true heroes go, I can only compare him to Rajnikant," he adds. As far as ETT director Kabir Khan is concerned, Brand Salman still has a lot of steam left.
