Bollywood’s Last 10 all-time blockbusters

The recent film to join the league of all-time blockbusters of Bollywood is the Salman Khan film Dabangg. The movie has made a whopping Rs 127 crores from its first seventeen days and is still continuing its dream run.

According to trade reports Dabangg is 17th film in the list of all-time blockbusters of Indian cinema. An all-time blockbuster differs from a blockbuster because of its humongous revenue and craze. Some of the classic films which were all-time blockbusters are - Mother India (1957), Mughal-E-Azam (1960), Jai Santoshi Maa (1975), Sholay (1975) and Ram Teri Ganga Maili (1985).
After these films, came Sooraj Barjatya’s Maine Pyar Kiya with a fresh cast. That was the year 1989 which marked the beginning of a golden era for Indian films in terms of box office business. The years 1989-2001 witnessed all-time blockbusters almost every year, which was a rarity before. Last year’s release 3 Idiots also enjoyed the status of being an all-time blockbuster.

1-Maine Pyar Kiya (1989)
This film gave Bollywood one of its biggest stars Salman Khan. Maine Pyar Kiya was the greatest hit of 1989 in India, and one of the most successful Bollywood movies of the 1980s. The movie’s total nett collection is approx Rs 66,92,00,000.
The movie’s ‘friends’ cap and dialogues were immensely popular among the youth.

2-Aankhen (1993)
Govinda and Chunky Pandey starred in one of the most successful comedies. This multi-starrer film about two spoiled brats took no time in tickling your funny bone. Oh there was also a cool monkey with loads of entertainment. The film’s total nett was approx Rs 26,77,00,000.
With Aankhen, actor Govinda and David Dhawan became a hit comedy pair.

3-Hum Aapke Hain Kaun (1994)
Rajshri Productions, the makers of hit family dramas, came up with Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, starring Madhuri Dixit and Salman. The film made new records at the box office with approx Rs 309,26,00,000 total nett. The film’s lavish sets and huge star cast was a major attraction for the families who like the way the film celebrated the Indian culture and family ties.
Hum Aapke Hain Kaun also paved the way for the filmmakers like Aditya Chopra and Karan Johar.

4-Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995)
Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge premiered on 19 October 1995 and was released nationwide on the next day. Directed by Aditya Chopra with stars Shahrukh Khan and Kajol, the movie, just like Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, was loved by Indian audiences. It earned over Rs 580 million in India and Rs 175 million overseas, the film became the biggest Bollywood hit of the year.
With this film Indian producers learnt how to tap the overseas market and to make films for the NRIs.

5-Raja Hindustani (1996)
A cute-looking cab driver/guide falls in love with a rich, sweet girl. Raja Hindustani directed by Dharmesh Darshan is also one of the most commercially successful films of Bollywood. The songs of the film were heard everywhere and people were going gaga over the film whose total nett earning was approx Rs 207,78,00,000.
The film won five Filmfare Awards including Best Actor (Aamir Khan) and Best Actress (Karisma Kapoor).

6-Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998)
College fun, love triangle and a small girl trying to find her papa’s best friend. Perfect plot! Kuch Kuch Hota Hai clicked with the audience and worked wonders at BO. Karan Johar’s debut film also brought designer clothes and style into the limelight. The film’s gross revenue is approx Rs 182,54,00,000.
Shahrukh and Kajol proved that they are the best onscreen couple.

7-Gadar Ek Prem Katha (2001)
Set in 1947 during the partition of India, the film tells the story of a truck driver, Tara Singh (Sunny Deol), a Sikh, who falls in love with a Muslim girl, Sakeena (Amisha Patel), who belongs to an aristocratic family. The movie grossed almost Rs. 72,00,00,000 and is one of the most successful films of Sunny Deol’s career.
Gadar: Ek Prem Katha was released at the time of Aamir Khan’s Lagaan but was more successful at the BO.

8-Ghajini (2008)
From 2001 to 2007 there was no highest grosser. The jinx was broken with the release of Ghajini. Full on action with a romantic angle, this film was a Hindi remake of a Tamil film with the same name. Ghajini, starring Aamir Khan who suffers from short-term memory loss in the film, kept roaring for weeks at the BO. The film’s total gross is approx Rs 170,50,00,000.
Aamir Khan reportedly spent almost a year in the gym, to develop a new bulked-up look.

9-3 Idiots (2009)
Audiences can’t get enough of 3 Idiots, many watched it several times. Upon release, the film broke all opening box office records in India. It was the highest-grossing film in its opening weekend in India and had the highest opening day collections for a Bollywood film until recently. Another Aamir Khan’s superhit film after Ghajini and the star didn’t disappoint. The movie’s total nett collection was approximately Rs 269,50,00,000.
The film was inspired by Chetan Bhagat’s celebrated novel ‘Five Point Someone’.

10-Dabangg (2010)
Finally Dabangg. Salman Khan has created box office history with this film after his two all-time blockbusters Maine Pyar Kiya and Hum Aapke Hain Kaun. To begin with, the film broke the opening day collections record of 3 Idiots. It also became the highest earning Hindi film in the first weekend. The film is still thriving at BO with the total collection of more than Rs 127 crore approx.
Dabangg 2 with the adorable character Chulbul Pandey is in the pipeline, confirms producer Arbaaz Khan.
