Sultan Has Strong Hold On Second Day

Sultan did excellent business on day two with business set to be very close to the first day with business in the 36 crore nett region. The two-day business will be in the 72-73 crore nett region. The film has actually gained in North India, Central India and Nizam / Andhra but when the final collections come from Mumbai circuit later on they may take the all India total a little lower than the first day.  

Normally there is a 15-20% drop on the day after the Eid holiday but here there is hardly a drop as Eid actually fell a day later than the official holiday had been announced. This is also why the collections are all over the place with each circuit behaving differently depending on the holiday situation.

 It is looking as per early estimates that it is the second time that a film has managed to score two days over 35 crore nett. The first being Bajrangi Bhaijaan last year which was over 35 crore nett on Saturday and Sunday. Dhoom 3 is the only film to score three days of over 30 crore nett and that is what Sultan can do or maybe even one better and a historic 4 or even 5 days of over 30 crore nett. But that will depend on where the films lands today.

The business is excellent all over but it is record breaking in East Punjab while Delhi / UP is playing catch up due to day one being Ramazan but the film is looking set for a fantastic run in North India. It was historic in North India on day two with business similar to Prem Ratan Dhan Payo record breaking day one. CI amd Nizam / Andhra also created history with the highest figures ever for any day in both circuits.

All India Six Weeks Comparison Bajrangi Bhaijaan V PK

Bajrangi Bhaijaan has gone ahead of PK again in the sixth week. It is the first time it has bettered PK weekly figures after the first week. It shows how various factors affect films as Bajrangi Bhaijaan has not held as strong as PK since week two but still the sixth week comes out better. It has a lot to do with the competition you face every week in the run. Weaker competition or no competition enables successful films hold better. For flop films it makes little difference.

The final gap between Bajrangi Bhaijaan and PK will be around 22 crore nett. Around 10 crore nett is down to Baahubali in South India and also because the film did not perform well in Tamil Nadu / Kerala where it was 5 crore nett less than PK which is a huge amount for such a small circuit.

The rest 12 crore and more is down to ticket pricing and more competition in its run than PK. Below are the weekly figures for Bajrangi Bhaijaan and PK for the first six weeks.

Q. Bajrangi Bhaijaan was seen as the biggest blockbuster of Salman Khan but an opening of 26 crore has to called a disappointment?

Ans. It is probably meant biggest grosser which it be. The fact is that Salman Khan is unlikley to give a bigger blockbuster than Hum Aapke Hain Kaun. You never say never but these sort of blockbusters come to very few and the rare stars that get such a blockbuster do not repeat it. As far as the opening goes it was Pre Eid and the real value of the opening is on par with Dhoom 3 which in real value is the biggest opening in recent times.

Q. Baahubali grossed 150 crore in its first weekend and Bajrangi Bhaijaan did 105 crore. Does this not show the real value of Bajrangi Bhaijaan which is being called a blockbuster and a great film?

Ans. This is like comparing houses with cars. Box Office numbers are generally inflated but there is a degree to that inflation. There are highly inflated numbers and others which are less inflated. Here is one number which is near actuals and another which is highly inflated so comparison is pointless. Basically Bajrangi Bhaijaan is the highest weekend for a film in one language and the second highest in multiple languages after Dhoom 3. Baahubali has also done incredible business but the numbers going around are much higher than its actual business.

Ans. It is totally dependent on the word of mouth but even if word of mouth is strong the business will be limited as the film looks like a regional film.

Ans. An All Time Blockbsuter is not record gross holder but just a film that is a lot bigger than the regular blockbuster. A film may beat PK in 3 years time but that does not mean its an All Time Blockbsuter because business will be generally higher. It will depend what the final Bajrangi Bhaijaan shares are and how the territories finish up. Easiest way to sum it is if it does not cross PK in any circuit in India then it won't be an All time Blockbuster because its not as if PK set records by distances that films like Sholay and Hum Aapke Hain Kaun did.

Bajrangi Bhaijaan grossed 10.25 crore nett in week four which is the third highest fourth week collection ever. The film in four weeks has grossed 309 crore nett and will probably settle at a lifetime total of 313-315 crore nett.

The film is the highest nett grosser ever in Delhi / UP, CP Berar, CI, Bihar , Assam and Orissa. The figures in East Punjab, Rajasthan and West Bengal are close to records but it may not have the legs to get another 50-70 lakhs needed in these three circuits. All three circuits do have the highest distributor share ever. The film has grossed more than any other film in history from single screens.

The footfalls will cross 3.5 crore which makes it the most watched film since Gadar in 2001 beating PK, 3 Idiots, Dhoom 3 and Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham.
