Friend’s if you like good movies & acting then you must go for wanted and if you don’t then stay at your homes………
In an industry wherein one disaster could end a promising career, Salman has effortlessly managed to remain on top and continues to be, at the age of 44, one of the most influential actors in the country. With Wanted, after far too many failures in the recent past, he proves yet again, that he has the talent and more importantly the star power to still carry a solo starrer.
Wanted…. is Salman deadliest performance to date ,the role that seems like an extention of his personality,you cann’t think of anyone else enacting this role except salman,he had not done this kind of movie in some while.his energy level is amazing,his dance steps simply outstanding,he lives and breathes his part,his acting,action,dialogue delivery everything was top class.he comes with his deadly stunts the kind never before seen on hindi screen, he proved to everyone what action means.
The movie has some great songs too, including a super duet Tum jaan- jaan kehke & love me-love me.Ayesha Takia is cute,charming & beautiful.Prabhu deva direction is very good he scores in the romantic scenes the interaction between Salman and Ayesha has some lovely moments. Vijayan master’s hard hitting action sequences are great.Prakash Raj puts in a blistering performance as Gunni bhai, his camio itself is worth the price of the ticket, Even after seeing dons by the dozens,this don will stay with you.Mahesh manjrekar is excellent. there is good comedy as well,But in the end, it’s Salman bhai who stays with you....
I think it’s really the best movie in the decade what action never before seen in any movie of india. Technically, Wanted is Bollywood’s best out-an-out action flick.the first action scene and the last one (climax) are fantastic.

Salman Khan doesn’t hesitate to name that ‘idiot’ (it’s not Shah Rukh, by the way) – just like he doesn’t hesitate to talk about his sporting ambitions, his court cases, being asked to stand for the elections... and, of course, SRK.

From Maine Pyaar Kiya to now,Salman stays the action hero forever. Actually, you’ve grown fitter over the years, haven’t you?

Yes. But it’s becoming very difficult now. I used to play many sports at that time, used to work out a lot. And then I used that to put a lot of children from the roads into gyms, I think, from having them watch me, from making fitness aspirational. Now, I’m going to take it to a different level with football and cricket. If I could do it then, I’m sure I can do it again.

Becoming the ambassador for football – was it a spontaneous call, ya soch ke Delhi aaye the?

Na na na. Mera koi decision soch ke nahin hota... mujhe jo karna hai, it’s all impulsive. Joh cheez jis waqt right lagti hai, woh main karta hoon.’

Did you decide in the stadium that you wanted to be the ambassador for soccer?

Nahin, uske pehle socha thaa, isliye stadium gaya thaa. The idea appealed to me. And Praful (Patel) is a dear friend, and also the chief of the Football Association right now – he felt that if I could get guys into the gym, I could get them onto the football field as well. The first sporting passion of most kids is football. You just need a ball and a ground.

The last Bollywood hero to become a sporting ambassador was Suniel Shetty, who supposedly became the brand ambassador for hockey. And that was the last one heard of it...

Achha? I’m not too clued in to that. But if I give my name to something, I’ll make sure I give it my one hundred per cent, yaar.

The IPL question: are you or are you not acquiring a team?

Bid karenge. Bid zaroor karenge. Agar bid mein mil gaya, toh team le lenge.

For football, you aren’t charging, it’s close to your heart... But IPL is a business investment. Yeh khayaal kahaan se aaya?

Dekhiye, as far as this goes, I’m going to do it at a different level altogether. One can raise a lot of money through this as well. There are many multinational companies who like to be associated with this, through logos, sponsorships and all that.

Bidding went up to 400 crores for some of the bigger teams last time. Do you have that sort of money in mind?

Itna? Nahin, itna budget toh nahin hai. If it goes to these levels then I can’t afford it! Let’s see.

And how long will you answer the question – are you following SRK?

See, I came into cinema first. Does that mean he followed me into the film industry? Or that we both followed Amitji or Dilip saab into movies?

Ek cheez achhi lagi, usme chale gaye, bas... Main hamesha apne se umar mein kam samajhta thaa lekin recently pata chala ki mujhse ek mahina bada hai woh – iska matlab yeh thode hai ki is duniya mein main isliye aaya kyunki woh aaye the pehle... Anyways, agar unki, ya kisi ki, yeh soch hai, toh unko mubarak ho.

TV would love a match between SRK’s and Salman’s teams, wouldn’t it, with all the undercurrents?

But it’s not as sharp as it’s made out to be. It’s very okay. He’s very respectful to my dad. My sisters-in-law, his wife, they’re very comfortable with each other, we don’t ask or influence them to be otherwise. It’s just that we’re not very comfortable with each other. And I’m sure he’s right where he is, and I’m right where I am.

We won’t see a Karan Arjun again?

Who knows what the future holds?

You won’t back out if you’re offered a movie with SRK?

No, no... I’m above all these things, yaar, these insecurities and all that...

Self-confessed Primitive Man, possessive man, outspoken guy... your dad was ribbing you about dating heroines and expecting them to behave like stay-at-home girls. You let Katrina do what she wants? You really don’t have a hassle with her acting opposite SRK?

No, I’ve never stopped her from doing a film with John or with anybody else, it’s her life, her career, but I’ve just put my foot down on one idiot.

Arre woh drama-shama karta hai, kaan pakadta hai, you know what all he does... there’s no meaning to it, it’s all... you know what I think of it.

Comfortable reinventing yourself as an ‘action hero’ at 44 with Wanted?

Hey, I’ve just restarted my career once again! Seriously, I haven’t done an action film in the longest time, and I think to stay fit I should do these films. Yeh sab romantic films karte raho, romantic scene mein paani ke andar se nikal kar aaye bare-chested, yeh sab theek hai. But to stay actually fit, bhaga-daudi, maara-maari, it takes a lot of energy, that’s what I wanted to do. Like when shooting for Veer, subah 6 baje I would get onto the horse and dismount at midnight... bechara ghoda!

What’s the fanatical gymming regime like?

Two hours or so almost, each day.

And sleep?

I’m fortunate, I get three hours or so each day. Then I sleep in instalments. Fifteen minutes here and there. Teen-chaar minute, shot ke pehle, baithe-baithe, khade hue, kabhi bhi.

How do you manage to live on three hours of sleep a day?

Chal jaata hai... jab mar jayenge tab ek baar theek se so lenge.

You’ve told people, bhai nahin bolne ka. What’s the affront there?

See, my name is Salman. Sohail calls me bhai, younger people around me call me bhai, that’s okay. But increasingly I’ve noticed that it’s becoming part of my name – I’m not ‘Salmanbhai’, okay?

Ya, sounds like a don...

Arre, not that way, they say it as a sign of respect!

Right...

The kids call me Salman, you realise? Just Salman. And when senior people, colleagues, older people begin calling me Salmanbhai, I get very uncomfortable, I say, this is not happening. Of course it’s not about taking offence. Bhai means they trust me, they believe in me... It’s like they call Sanju baba – Sanju baba is 50, but they all treat him like a little baby. Suniel is called anna, big brother. It’s about that sentiment you evoke in others.

Sanju baba has taken very clear political lines. SRK is seen to have clear political preferences and friendships. You must’ve had offers to join up too... You campaigned for people from several political groups in the last elections...

This is not for me. I have a lot of friends from the political world, but it’s not for me to join in. Yes, I campaign for people who I believe do outstanding work. I campaigned for Kamal Nath, for Anju, and for others I believed would make a difference. The people must believe that I am standing by someone because I believe he or she will do good for them. I have lots of friends who called me, but I know that if I go there and campaign, they will win the election, but they will do nothing, so I didn’t go.

So you rejected requests from friends to campaign for them?

Yes.

Nobody asks you to fight the elections?

I was asked to stand (for elections). But I didn’t want to. My job is here, as an actor. I don’t know anything about how to run the country. It’s not my cup of tea, boss!

Emraan feels he is discriminated against in India, SRK was angry at being singled out abroad...

The audience doesn’t take us as Muslim, it says, yeh Salman hai, hamara star hai, hamara bhai hai. If my sister got married to a Hindu (Alvira Khan is married to Atul Agnihotri), it’s her choice, he’s a good man, he’s a super guy, we love him and respect him. If she’d wanted to marry a Muslim guy, that would’ve been super too. But we wouldn’t want to have her married off to someone who may not be a good husband or a good father just because he is a Muslim. On screen we always play Prem, Rahul, Radhe... 90 per cent population which is non-Muslim, usne toh banaya hai humko star. So I don’t believe in all this.

But there is a very, very minute population of people who have no idea of what the religion is about, who have their own idea of it and of what they want to do, who have made life difficult for Muslims.

You don’t get hassled travelling because your name is Khan?

If you have to go to a particular country, you should be prepared to respect their rules. Mere saath toh India mein hi kitna kuch hua hai. Jin cheezon mein main involve nahin tha, unme things were blown out of proportion because I was a star. Main Jodhpur jaata hoon for hearings, Mumbai mein case chal raha hai... but at least on that account people think that if this can happen to Salman, it can happen to us, so cases of hunting or drunken driving come down significantly.

The rounds of courts continue?

It becomes a media trial. Hum khud nahin baat kar sakte hain about any detail because it is subjudice. Lekin baaki saari duniya baat karti hai. Aapne do galat article likh diye mere bare mein toh judge sahib ne dekhe hain.... Woh kahin na kahin influence kar jaate hain.

In any high-profile celeb case in a small court, if you let the person get away, the media will hound the court and say, how can you let him get away, he is powerful, has connections, etc, etc. If the star is thrown in prison, then also the media will start off, saying fans are upset, the case is not strong enough, you are just making an example out of him. So it’s a Catch-22 situation even for the authorities in cases involving stars... We need people to take a stand.

You’ve not been in the news for controversy for some time. Doesn’t that feel strange?

Haan, kaafi time se koi gul nahi khila hai. Main kaafi time se kisi galat jagah pe galat time pe nahi mila hoon.

A girl was saying ‘Main aapko apna pati maan chuki hoon’ today. How do you handle that sort of thing?

It’s scary, man, I don’t know how to handle it, I just don’t.

You get letters written in blood and all that sort of stuff?

Yes, that is why I stopped answering my fan mail. Yeh pehle bahut hota tha. I don’t like that sort of stuff. I can’t handle it.

You should stay single, actually, then girls can keep telling you they consider you their husband!

Yaar agar kaagaz pe sign karna shaadi hai, toh maaf kar do mujhe, ki nahin hui shaadi meri. Waise toh agar divorce bhi sirf sign karne se hota, bahut se logon ke divorce ho chuke hain, bas papers sign nahin huye hain!

Hum abhi paperwork tak aaye nahin hain... when people stay together and break up, it is also like a marriage and divorce, bas functions nahin hote!

Well well well, what have we here? One of Salman Khan's most awaited flicks Wanted has been in the news like a frenzy since the theatrical teaser hit the screens and the websites. The response has been hurricane-like, with movie buffs waiting with bated breath for the movie to unfold this Eid! With the music just hitting the stands, the curiosity level has been sky high so what is the music like? I erase my mind of all irrational expectations before inserting the brand new CD into my laptop, plugging in my headphones and waiting for the pause before iTunes pops up to play the tracks...

BANG! That's how the album starts. However reading the title of the song “Love Me Love Me” you would assume that it would be some lounge track with English lyrics added to it. But we are proven wrong after the immediate start of that powerful ethnic-sounding ‘THUMP’. And once the thump starts, there is no stopping it. Sometimes, Wajid himself comes before the mic to provide eclectic vocals, which make an irresistible combination with Jalees Sherwani's zany lyrics that start off with the lines “Love Me Love Me Love Me, Your Mama says you Love me, My Pappa Says you Love me, Just Love Me Baby Love Me”. The start is immediately hooking and grabs you toward the song for repeated play. Pads have been used well alongside the synth loops that are equally focused. Wajid might have had a blast singing this song as he is completely in form. Amrita Kak is efficient in whatever lines she gets to sing. And considering the picturization of the song, the video of which we have been getting to see in the TV spots recently, the song is an instant hit, and will be constantly on radio, hogging the airplay just as “Twist” from Love Aaj Kal and “Dhan Te Nan” from Kaminey did. It is evident that these songs have cemented their positions as chart-busters. Now it's the time for "Love Me Love Me" to gain fan following far and wide. The infectious beats alongside the opening lyrics are so zany that the song keeps on repeating in my mind. GOD, STOP IT NOW!

We then move on to the second track called“Ishq Vishk” which falls into the R&B / Hip-Hop genre. Strings, followed by hip-hop beats, coupled later with Kamaal Khan's sonic vocals give a fire cracking start to the song! Suzanne provides ample Westernized seductive vocals and gives it extra impact. Sunidhi Chauhan comes later to completely change the feeling of this upbeat romantic track which is a must hear. Listen out especially for Sunidhi’s entry, which raises the song to dizzy heights. Sameer's lyrics are an added highlight. The words are simple, making the masses 'connect' to the song with ease. Surely another infectious hear!

After two extremely contagious and upbeat songs, Sajid and Wajid move into the lounge/romance category with a gem called "Dil Leke". With their trademark stamp over it (i.e. you'll begin to reminisce on Sajid Wajid's “O Jaana” from God Tussi Great Ho and “Lal Dupatta” from Mujhse Shaadi Karoge), some listeners might write it off as déjà vu, but nevertheless, it still turns out to be a magical and delightful track for romantics alike. With just the right elements of Indian and Western melodies fused together I can already picturize Salman Khan and Ayesha Takia Azmi romancing each other either in some opulent set or somewhere outside, somewhere exotic. Shaan and Shreya Ghoshal are wonderful in this song. While Shaan is at his usual best it is Shreya Ghoshal whose vocals manages to open the doors of my imagination to a far away place that is both vivid and exotic. Suzanne's backing vocals are efficient enough, but had they been absent from the song, it would not have made any difference. Overall, another track that requires repeated listening to have the song grow upon the listener.


Post three enjoyable tracks, the album takes a sudden, unexpected and unwanted dip with the next track titled "Le Le Mazaa Le", which is supported by the loud and garish vocals of Hrishikesh Kamerkar and Nikita Nigam. While Sajid Wajid try hard to give the song a Spanish twist, they end up (unintentionally) mixing a variety of genres, thus producing an (probable) item number that fails to deliver the right punch like the previous three tracks. Hrishikesh Kamerkar is unsure of whether he wants to ape R.D. Burman or K.K. He ends up making a really pathetic interpretation of both, which may not amuse fans of either. Nikita Anand tries hard to impress, but well, the track overshadows her (partly) silver lining. The lyrics don't impress either. Overall, this song turns out to be the first damp squib in the soundtrack. One can only wait for the song's picturization to check if it can be redeemed on that count.

The “THUMP” is back with "Jalwa" which starts yet again with some contagious beats that raise the expectation levels for the song, and as the song progresses, with its part Hindi, part Western synth loops, you want to hear more. But alas, as soon as Wajid Ali starts crooning behind the mic, you realise that the track is nothing more than an ego trip, with the lyrics sketching the character of the role Salman Khan plays in the movie - that of the dreaded gangster “Radhe”. The song had potential due to its fantastic arrangements, and just the right assortment of beats to click with the crowd, but the lyrics totally ruin the whole outing. Jalees Sherwani's decision to take a trip to the 90's spoils it in the process. Overall, a decent track that needs good picturization.

So far it's been all urban/fusion tracks, Sajid and Wajid make a sudden U-Turn with a full-on desi track called "Tose Pyaar Karte Hain". It sounds like a kind of ode to the naughty, playful and upbeat romantic tracks of the 90’s. Just when everyone thought that such a song would never be released again, the duo revisit an era gone by as in David Dhawan comedies and long ago, were termed as fast-paced classics in Kishore Kumar movies and compositions. Somehow, I remember that song from the cult comedy Padosan, called “Ek Chatur Naar Karke Sringar”, which still makes me giggle…. Overall, this one is another must hear.

With six tracks over with, I am suddenly devoid of all expectations for the next song, which reads on the back of the disc cover as "Most Wanted Track". Right from the very start we get Salman’s punch lines from the movie indicating it is a theme track. And theme tracks are arguably meant to be one of the best offerings of the respective soundtrack right? Unfortunately you feel that something's missing with this one and as a result you will find yourself avoiding it unless you’re a die-hard Sallu fanatic. Maybe they could have inserted the instrumental “techno” version of the track which would enhance the listener repeat level on this one.
After the spate of seven original tracks, comes a sudden hurricane of remixes. And I use the word ‘hurricane’, as never in any other Sajid-Wajid album will you find remixes of almost all original songs like you do here! Unfortunately, the remixes fail to click, as all of them have been pepped up with the ‘been-there-heard-that’ club beats, synth loops, and pads, thus making the whole set an average affair that will only be hogged by DJs in clubs. To conclude this collaboration between Salman Khan and the duo of Sajid and Wajid is surely no Partner but turns out to be somewhat better and more redeeming than God Tussi Great Ho. The three redeeming tracks are “Love Me Love Me”, “Ishq Vishk”, “Dil Leke” and along with “Jalwa”, have the potential to rise the album to the top of the charts for some weeks until a better album arrives- the upcoming Dil Bole Hadippa will be stiff competition, particularly with the king of chart-busters: Pritam, at the helm. Until then, I can only hope that Salman Khan's prediction comes true and Wanted thunders better than Ghajini in the box office. Until then, let's wait and see!

Additional Analysis- Remixes

“Love Me Love Me (Mama Papa Mix)” - With such a ridiculous and laugh-inducing name, I wondered if the remix would do any good, or perhaps, any justice to the original. But reading such a redeeming name as DJ “Akbar Sami” generated an inbuilt expectation. All this expectation is regrettably shattered as the remix turns out to be a watered-down version of the original, which creates a heavy impact with it's beats but little more. This one's a complete downer. And what's with the Spanish touch? Below average fare.

“Ishq Vishk (Remix)” - With the original again winning hands down in impressing the listener, this one tries the same old trick by increasing the tempo and adding the same old club beats, but compared to the previous one it sounds a little better in comparison, though in reality it isn't really groundbreaking. It's just that the original song is quite overpowering. Undoubtedly it's a decent hear and will find a fair share of admirers and detractors.

“Dil Leke (Remix)” - Now I wonder if it was really necessary to make a remix of this particular song. This one just doesn't make sense; it seems like this mix was made for the sake of making the ‘mix’. A complete downer, considering the original is a much cherished romantic outing, and the remix doesn't help much with the repeat value.

“Jalwa On The House (Remix)” - The original song had amazing beats, but this one works in most parts, because of its eclectic arrangements. This makes it the only remix so far to add any value to the original and gives it some repeat value. While the original did not break much ground due to it's average lyrics, this one has an amazing set of pads, synth loops, bass and beats, therefore making a contagious hear.

“Tose Pyaar Karte Hain (Remix)” - The final remix fails to deliver as it just sounds like an enhanced, extended version of the original with extra beats. Akbar Sami just can't get it right in this one. Sadly, another disappointment.

Salman Khan avoids intrusion in his life and profession but ends up drawing maximum attention for both right and wrong reasons. He is ready with the second edition of his television show 10 Ka Dum while awaiting the release of four of his big films. In a candid chat with our correspondent, the actor answers every question in good humor.

Hi, finally we manage to catch you?
(Ha...ha...ha). Yes, I have been running all this time. I am tired and I need a good sleep. I am just back from London after shooting for LONDON DREAMS and now I start shooting for 10 Ka Dum. It's work, work and work and nothing else.

Do you still feel the same about the media, hold grudges and wishfully avoid them?
I never avoided the media. Truly, speaking I don't have any grudges. See, I am ready to give all the answers. Actually, I have changed. There was a time, when I would show my annoyance but every action is guided by a reason. The media annoyed me. I still feel there are certain questions, which are personal, which only my parents or maybe the ones who are really close to me have the right to ask. If someone asks such questions, I can always get annoyed. My fans never ask me such questions...not even my senior colleagues because they know it might be in bad taste and be demeaning. Now it's different. I have grown over the years and avoid all the questions. (Laughs)

So you say you have changed...
Of course I have. I think that's the best thing to do. I have stopped reacting to things. In fact that helps. This is the new way to be in news. Earlier, whenever I said something, it got misrepresented. Now, that I don't at least the news doesn't get distorted. Earlier I wasn't matured. Now I have cooled down.

But controversy never seems to elude you.
What can I do? I don't create it. I know the media's problem. A good article is always boring but if you spice it up, it works and that is how people get such stories.

Which Claudia? (Laughs) Schiffer? Or are you asking about Ciesla?

Its former Playboy model and actress Claudia Ciesla who is being linked with you?
(Ha...Ha...Ha). I know. I too have been reading about all these in the newspapers. Okay let me clear it out. I know Claudia, as an actress, she had come to my house only once, spent some time and even met my family. That's all and nothing more.

Apparently, you had to compromise on your fee this year for 10 Ka Dum.
Compromise! (Gives a mischievous smile). Recession... recession!!!! See they made me cut down my fee citing recession as a reason. (Grins)

In fact it is said that you are doing it at half the price.
No...no...no... come on... I also have some market value. I can't cut it down so much. (Smiles)

You must be thrilled to be thrilled to host it once again.
Of course I am thrilled. It was during the last year only when I knew that this show is going to be a hit. And now that it's a hit I am hosting it for the second time and I would now love to host it for another couple of seasons. See... I love this show. It is a common man's show and my fans also get to see me as the common man. I am just like them and today whatever I am it's because of the public. They have made me what I am; else I would not even get the job of a darwaan (gatekeeper). They have the body and height and I don't even have that.

Okay, tell me why didn't you vote in the just concluded general elections?
See, I know that this is one thing that will be asked now but I wasn't in India. Had I been here I would certainly have voted. I was shooting in London... a lot of money has gone in the project and I was doing my work with my costars, director and the producer. I don't want to show off by flying down to India to vote only to get clicked outside the polling booth. And where there were only 27 per cent, 36 per cent and 47 per cent votes in some places my one vote wouldn't have mattered much. But yes, had I been in India, I would certainly have cast my vote.

But Shah Rukh Khan flew down all the way from South Africa to vote.
May be he has more money than me. I am not that rich. (Laughs)

However, you campaigned for everyone in Bollywood this year.
(Cuts in) No, not everyone, but only my friends.

Who would you invite as guests in 10 Ka Dum this time.
This time it's up to the channel. They will take a call but I am really looking forward to have some interesting guests. Last time was fun and I still feel Aamir should have attempted the last questions and made more money. It was one of the best episodes.

So you don't have any problems with Aamir?
I don't have any problems with anyone. And why are you asking only about Aamir. I don't have any problems with Shah Rukh. (Smiles) And even if there's a problem why should I tell you. (Ha...ha...ha). Look I have matured now.

But last year you invited so many of your friends to the show.
I think I am not left with any friends. (Laughs once again). But I would really love to have people like Sanju (Sanjay Dutt), Govinda, Sunny (Deol) and Dharmendraji to the show. Among women I would really love to have Madhuri (Dixit) and Sridevi as guests. Let's see what happens.

So, how has your shooting been going on?
I have four releases. First it's WANTED and the MAIN AUR MRS KHANNA and then LONDON DREAMS comes sometime near Diwali and then VEER.

And both VEER and WANTED are action films.
In fact, VEER has more action. The story is based in 18th century and it was more taxing than WANTED. And I am not saying this because it's my production. We have shot most of the film and the shooting in Jodhpur is over and the rest will be shot soon.

You have also written the story of VEER. So are you seriously considering scriptwriting?
See it's in my blood. It's as simple as that. I will write more of it in future and I am enjoying life. I have four releases this year and it's after a long time and all are different kinds of films. So you know how immersed I am in work.

Okay so when do you get married?
Soon...very soon. My parents are putting pressure on me (laughs). So eventually I will.

it's a great movie from start to end. everything is perfect ,i think this is best film of 2008,salman khan prove that he is a superstar.he deserves an award for his good performances.he is the highlight of the film.The chemistry between salman and katrina is superb.
Anil kapoor was excellent in his role and zayed khan also did a great job.Subhash Ghai came back with a bang with Yuvvraaj.it is a class film. its sure to make an longlasting impact on the true movie lover and understanding audience.
cinematography by kabir lal is wonderful. Music legend A.R.Rahman is at his best. Tum meri dost ho, and all songs are chart busters. Great film. Must watch.....

Every step you take, every move you make... we'll be watchin' you. Have altered the lines of a famous song. For, this one's applicable for Subhash Ghai, a proficient storyteller, one of the most successful stories from this side of the Atlantic. Irrespective of how his films are received at the ticket window, Ghai's movies are always under scrutiny. You watch every film with a magnifying glass.
YUVVRAAJ is no exception!Ghai's forte has been drama. Recall the dramatic moments in KARZ, VIDHAATA, MERI JUNG, RAM LAKHAN, KARMA, SAUDAGAR. He re-visits the genre with YUVVRAAJ. Besides, YUVVRAAJ is his most opulent work thus far. It has a sweeping effect, the film makes a stunning visual statement.
Honestly, YUVVRAAJ isn't Ghai's best work, but post YAADEIN, KISNA and BLACK & WHITE, YUVVRAAJ salvages him, even redeems the storyteller.
The story [Ghai] mirrors a universal truth. Greed leads to disputes and in turn, ruins all relationships. A fact you've heard or witnessed time and again in real life. While the story is captivating, the screenplay doesn't really do justice to the thought. Also, Rahman's music acts as a soothing balm, but the problem is, it takes time to grow on the listener. And that could be a deterrent.
Yet, in all fairness, YUVVRAAJ is a notch above the commonplace. If you intend spending your hard-earned money on it or devoting 3 hours of your precious time on Ghai's new outing, chances are you won't regret it.

Deven Yuvvraaj [Salman Khan] is a chorus singer, in love with Anushka [Katrina Kaif]. Her father Dr. Banton [Boman Irani], however, is dead against this relationship. Things take a turn when Deven's father passes away and he returns to London to stake claim on his father's wealth.
He meets his two estranged brothers Gyanesh Yuvvraaj [Anil Kapoor] and Danny Yuvvraaj [Zayed Khan] after almost twelve years. But things aren't hunky-dory between them...
Ghai has an eye for visuals and every frame of YUVVRAAJ seems like a painting on celluloid. Unmistakably, that's the first thing you notice as YUVVRAAJ unfolds.
It takes time to absorb YUVVRAAJ. In fact, Ghai doesn't open all his cards at the very outset. It's only when the father [Javed Shaikh] passes away and Mithun Chakraborty, the Executor of the Will, enters the scene that the wheels start moving.
The film gathers momentum after the interval. If the first hour has a few by-now-famous Ghai scenes, the second hour sees Ghai in form, with a number of sequences staying in your memory. The penultimate 20-25 minutes are the best. Watch Anil go through the handycam with disbelief, watch Anil and Salman's act during the concert, watch Salman's emotional outburst towards the end... also the titles [brings back memories of OM SHANTI OM].

On the flip side, the screenplay is erratic. There're constant highs and lows in this journey, the film works in patches. In fact, the screenplay falls prey to predictability and mediocrity at places.
Ghai handles the dramatic scenes with flourish. Rahman's music is soothing, but you expect more because Ghai's movies are embellished with lilting music that you recall even after 2 or 3 decades. Kabir Lal captures the striking beauty of Europe well. The output is superb. The sets [Omung Kumar] are truly majestic.
YUVVRAAJ belongs to Anil Kapoor, who towers above the entire cast and delivers a natural, believable performance. Salman's looks are inconsistent. At times the boyish look is intact, at times he looks bloated. Ditto for his hairstyle. His performance, however, is better, mainly towards the finale. Zayed tries hard and convinces in a few scenes. Mithun Chakraborty is fantastic in a brief role.
Katrina looks angelic. Despite the focus being on the three men, she registers an impact. Boman Irani is credible, especially in the scene when he steps out of the Operation Theatre towards the end. Aushima Sawhney is confident. Anjan Srivastava and the pack of villains/vamps look straight out of RAM LAKHAN and TAAL.

On the whole, YUVVRAAJ is interesting in parts, with the penultimate 20/25 minutes taking the film to an all-time high. At the box-office, the package [a mammoth cast, Subhash Ghai, A.R. Rahman, the stunning locales of Europe] should ensure a hearty opening and with no major opposition in the forthcoming week, it should keep its investors smiling.

Salman Khan - “When Rahman and Subhashji come together, they give you the best music. The music of Yuvvraaj is outstanding. Its very soulful, peaceful and carries a sweetness of its own with powerful lyrical value.”

IT’S OFFICIAL! By some astonishing miracle, 2008 WILL be a memorable year for music. Yes indeed! But that miracle has come solely by way of Allah Rakha Rahman (ARR). Because without the outstanding music of Jodhaa Akbar, Ada…A Way of Life and Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, the year is arguably one of the worst in recent times littered with mediocrity and devoid of what we all know and love to be the ‘essence’ of music, it’s soul and passion. This is largely due to the complacency of other music directors who have lost their focus but let’s not dwell on them. Because this is the era of Rahman and this is the year of a maestro who has truly been a ‘godsend’ (no pun intended) for all music lovers.

And thankfully there has been little delay with his latest, Subhash Ghai’s much anticipated Yuvvraaj , a musical about family bonds, love and the arrogance and overconfidence of contemporary youth (sold under the banner “everyone want’s to be a rock star!”), in particular three siblings (Salman Khan, Anil Kapoor and Zayed Khan) and a lead cellist (Katrina Kaif). So just as with Taal, Rahman’s music is expected to feature in a big way, says the director:

Subhash Ghai- “Like Taal, Yuvvraaj is based on music. I've told Rahman, Yuvvraaj belongs to two people, Rahman and Subhash Ghai, in that order. All the main characters are musicians in Yuvvraaj."
Any comparisons to Taal are consequently inevitable but unfortunate as that is a true classic and a perfect score in so many ways but if anyone can do it, it’s the legend himself! So having set the scene dear listener, it is time to head towards the soundtrack and as long as you are prepared to stick by it, another journey into musical heaven beckons….

A journey starting with Symphony No.5 (Beethoven) is setting some precedence for the OST. The first track Main Hoon Yuvvraaj does exactly that (performed by Chennai String Orchestra) and provides a short introduction to the movie with vocals by none other than Salman Khan himself. In this he reveals a number of interesting cues but one thing is for sure….he is a 'bad guy' and he is Yuvvraaj out to prove he can be a superstar with his singing!

And his first attempt at stardom comes immediately with the next track, the quite wonderfully composed Tu Meri Dost Hain. The music, starting on a simple note, is eerily soft yet ever so alluring eventually developing into a blissful tune that will undoubtedly mesmerize you upon repeated listening. But why are you surprised? These are the hallmarks of classic Rahman! In particular the melodious cello play just takes the track to another level and the accompanying symphony effects are fabulous as are the dovetailing beats…everything links together so harmoniously, I am simply at a lost for words to describe the beauty of this composition. Special mention also to Gulzar saab for his gifted lyrics that add so much meaning to the song. Furthermore it appears that Rahman’s singing dynasty has added another sensation in the form of Benny Dayal (who also sang in Jaane Tu..) who sings in stunning fashin alongside the maestro himself. But it’s Shreya Ghoshal’s entry midway through that is a masterstroke and just the icing on the cake. Honestly, if it wasn’t for Rahman’s earlier release this year from Jodhaa Akbar i.e. the amazing Khwaja Mere Khwaja, this would be my pick for the most outstanding track of 2008. Genius!

A.R.Rahman- “Subhash Ghai is very different from other directors. He has really worked hard on the visuals. They look really colorful and really romantic. It’s almost treated in a musical way where it’s more realistic than just background music.”

Ok it’s now time for some party as the spotlight moves onto Zayed Khan and so beckons the next track Shano Shano. Let’s be honest from the outset, this is the weakest track of Yuvvraaj by some distance. However it’s not a total disaster when you take it in the context of the movie. Yes the music sounds like something out of a 1980s disco floor but if Zayed wants to groove to some chaotic music, as a composer, that is what you have to deliver! At the very least Rahman provides variety with some interesting musical instruments (it’s not all synth) and the use of multiple singers including Sonu Nigaam, Srinivas, Karthik, Timmy, Sunaida, Vivienne Pocha, Tina. Lyrics are about as good as they get for such a track. This is passable but the soundtrack offers so much more so let’s move on. Incidentally Shano Shano Remix by Krishna Chetan contains more vocals by Ember that are reminiscent of a ‘bad boy’ Yuvvraaj and hence the song is quite fitting for the movie. Nice alternative but nothing more.

After that minor blip, the soundtrack diverts itself onto the SOUL of Yuvvraaj with the utterly spellbinding Tu Muskura. The cello marks a sensational return and solo cellist V.R. Sekar and Elidh Martin (K M M C Faculty) do Rahman proud with some fine performances. Their cello play is underpinned by a percussion that hypnotises you soothingly from the start and keeps you firmly in a trance until the very end. As if that wasn’t enough, the allure of a previous melody (belonging to Tu Meri Dost Hain) sweeps past you briefly as Rahman magically weaves it into the song via the deft strings of Seenu's Mandolin play.

And yet, we have not even discussed the true catalyst of the song. So many have written her off but Rahman as we know, is loyal to his singing dynasty. And so marks the return of an old favourite: Alka Yagnik. Well in my opinion (based on her singing here) it will be a travesty if she is not nominated for the best female playback singer (award) for a performance that is as mesmerizing as the musical backdrop that she sings against. She is simply a transformed singer here, sometimes unrecognizable and from recollection, her last performance of such magnitude was Rang Hai (Meenaxi: A Tale of Three Cities) which confirms the mastery of ARR over his singers. Javed Ali did a great job in Jashn-e-Bahaara but plays second fiddle here to the bewitching vocals of Alka. Gulzar’s lyrics grab your inner soul and churn out what is left of your emotions… WOW! This is definitely one step closer to musical heaven….you could quite literally waste away hours, even days listening to this soul stirring masterpiece!

Gulzar- “When I saw the songs of Yuvvraaj on screen, I sent a message to Rahman saying that they were magnificent, and this is a very honest opinion of his songs and picturisation. Great showman puts up a great show! I think the performances of Subhash’s Yuvvraaj will go a long way in carrying this film ahead. It touches your heart.”
After such an emotionally draining roller coaster that was Tu Muskura one feels the need for a break and a diversion. Rahman duly obliges with Mastam Mastam, a delightfully uplifting track that also ranks as the most innovative of the soundtrack and also one of the best of 2008. The music is simple yet oozes witchcraft (the dhol and cello in tandem, play mind games on you like you have never heard before!), playful but at times melancholy, witty but with an underlying message. The interaction between the singers, Sonu Nigaam (outstanding as ever), Alka Yagnik, Naresh & Benny, is another highlight as are the incredibly unique and diverse lyrics, hats off to you Gulzar saab! Where Mastam Mastam lacks in instant attraction or a catchy melody, it more than makes up for after repeated listening and becomes an extremely enjoyable outing. Just be ready to click your fingers to one of Rahman’s most underrated song of 2008.
Shridhar (Sound Engineer – Yuvvraaj) - “I think its gonna rock, well, its gonna orchestrate… It’s going to reach a lot of people… and touch their minds and souls…”

The soulful journey of Yuvvraaj ends with Zindagi in which the composer continues to amaze in more ways than one. Depending on your preferences and mood swings, you could potentially enjoy this more than Tu Muskura. First up expect to be blown away by the Woodwinds play by P M K Naveen Kumar. If you recover from that, there is the enticing piano and strings of the Chennai String Orchestra. Rahman’s fusion of these incredible sounds is the best remedy for a stressful mind! The distinct vocals are instantly recognizable but this is not Hariharan listeners, this is Srinivas, another long time favourite of Rahman who also sang in the brilliant Yeh Jo Zindagi Hai (Earth 1947). In fact with such awesome vocals, one wonders why we have not heard more from him. Gulzar outdoes himself once again and for his complete collection in Yuvvraaj, runs away with the best lyrics of the year award. Zindagi is another must listen.

The penultimate track Dil Ka Rishta is a diversion of a completely different kind that takes you by complete surprise! Initially you don’t realize as a beautiful piano introduction is cut short by a cello play but your senses are instantly awestruck by the powerfulnature of the drums and the full-blown orchestration that follows immediately after that. Welcome to the PASSION of Yuvvraaj and another unique twist to the soundtrack! This one has it all; a catchy tune, peppy beats, symphony orchestra, English verses (by Blazze) and some killer vocals by Sonu Nigaam, Roopkumar Rathod and ARR himself. Rahman puts this potpourri of ingredients to amazing use and delivers another winner even thought strictly speaking, the song is clearly situational and is attached to the relationship of the three brothers in the movie. Fascinating yet irresistibly Rahman!

Manmohini Morey ends the OST with a short classical piece that Rahman enhances with the use of synth to suit the taste of modern listeners. Vijay Prakash provides the vocals against Gulzar’s verses. Undoubtedly a commendable effort with addictive nuances, the track is too short to make any lasting impression. However do listen out for the chilling return of the cello fromTu Muskura around the 1:50 mark…clearly the maestro couldn’t resist one last rendezvous!

So where does Yuvvraaj OST sit in the hallmarks of all time great Rahman soundtracks? It will probably be years before we can answer that, will it stand the test of time? Without question. However what is clear is that it is not flawless in its execution like say a Taal OST which was perfect from A-Z. However we cannot underestimate the impact the soundtrack will have on the movie, the potential is colossal whatever the fate of the movie at the box office.

Comparisons with his other releases in 2008 are also unnecessary and futile. Each one stood it’s own tests respectively and more than satisfied audiences, fans and producers/directors alike. With the odd exception, everything else (outside of Rahman’s court) this year is so far behind for quality it’s embarrassing. So instead, let us simply rejoice this moment, your moment, the minutes, the hours, the days and the year 2008 when our finest music composer (at least of this era) gifted us an unprecedented array of compositions that became for us, Musical Nirvana in several guises…Yuvvraaj sits proudly towards the top for having outstanding music.

And in case you are wondering, the magic continues shortly with the soundtrack to Ghajini (Remake) …long live the legend. Long live A.R.Rahman.

Subhash Ghai (to Rahman): “Now that most of the popular Hindi film songs are only about disco and Punjabi folk music, does it makes sense to make a musical like Yuvvraaj?” Rahman's response: “Why not? If you get out of your comfort zone…go for experiments and innovations….new music will happen!”
