Witch Hunting Of Salman Khan – The Media Style

Since the day of Salman Khan’s conviction and subsequent bail, the media had gone berserk in covering it and commenting upon it. Those with a platform to scream and shout were doing so to their heart’s content. The rest were using every possible opportunity in traditional or social media to make vicious attacks on him in the garb of sympathy for the poor or concern for the judicial system in India.

Every freelance journalist/columnist was giving lessons in morality and shedding tears for people he/she didn’t care about for the last 13 years. The suit was followed on the social media as well. It was not a coincidence. The outrage was being engineered. The sudden concern for everything that is bad with the Indian judicial system also, was deliberate and timed for a particular purpose. Media’s conduct in all this was highly objectionable and condemnable to say the least.

Media chose to selectively inform, misinform, mislead and criticize baselessly. They arranged debates on wrong premises and tried putting words in people’s mouths. Some media houses ran twitter hash tags that were sure to invoke strong ‘for & against’ views. It was actually an exercise in unnecessary maligning of the man as the ‘against’ brigade was bound to go ballistic.
They used Salman’s name and popularity to gain TRPs & eyeballs and then dished out the spun, warped reports and opinions to this increased viewership and readership, to denigrate him further. They had been at it for years and this verdict provided an opportunity to take it to a new level.

Let’s see a few tricks that were being played for a while and some new ones.

The Power of Repetition - First and foremost, they termed it as a ‘Hit and Run’ case and ‘drunk driving’ case even before all the details were out and even before the trial started. For the last 13 years, they freely referred to Salman Khan as the person ‘who killed people sleeping on the pavement with his reckless, drunk driving’. They had given their verdict even before the trial started and this constant reference for years affected people in such a way that everybody started taking it for granted.

Many a times, accident was described in such a fashion as if the reporter were inside the car when everything happened. On what basis and with what authority they were doing it is anybody’s guess. But the result of this ceaseless repetition is such, that now even if it is proven beyond doubt and with clinching arguments that Salman was not driving the car and was not drunk; people will find it hard to believe.

The inordinate delay – Media harped a lot about the delay without mentioning even once that this is how Indian courts work and a verdict coming after 15-20 years is no big deal. Suggesting and letting people think that the delay has been caused by the defense suited them better. They also did not bother to talk about statements like this one from victim Abdullah Rauf  Shaikh who has said on record, “During the course of case there was no attempt to bribe me by any one, to change or to rehash my statement. Police called me according to the dates and I went and gave my statement whenever I was asked to. There was no pressure, I said what I saw and experienced. My statement was never tampered with.”
Apart from Abha Sing’s empty claims, there was nothing they could show as an effort from Salman’s side to cause a delay. Yet, they didn’t stop suggesting that the defense has purposely delayed the case.

Ten Years’ Imprisonment - Once the clause of culpable homicide not amounting to murder was added and fresh trial started in 2012, they deliberately started mentioning 10 years imprisonment everywhere. The much discussed clause IPC 304 (II) also has the option of only fine as the punishment. The punishment could be 0 to 10 years of imprisonment, a fine or a combination of both and not only 10 years imprisonment as hammered by the media. This provision of fine was not mentioned at all. Every single time if there was even a passing mention of the case, they made it a point to say that Salman can face up to 10 years of jail term. Then the words ‘up to’ slowly disappeared and he was ‘facing a 10 year jail term’. All this made people believe that if convicted he is going to be sentenced to a 10 year jail term. So, when the five years’ sentence came which itself was harsh, people felt it was less and a favor is being done to Salman Khan.

The Bail drama - It was pretty clear that the case was going to the High Court. Yet, they ran stories of how Bollywood is going to be affected and created an atmosphere that made people believe, it’s all over for Salman khan and now he is going to spend five years in jail. Salman’s was obviously a fit case for bail and he was going to get the bail sooner or later. Even though his bail was a result of preparedness and swift action of his lawyers, they made the bail itself look like a gross injustice. It was discussed incessantly and despite assurances by the lawyers that there is nothing irregular about it, the TV anchors and press reporters did not budge from their stand. They ran provocative headlines when they knew there is nothing unusual about both the things. And then the entire line of reporting was fashioned like this. They tried to give a feeling of common man being wronged which evoked just the reaction that they wanted.

Problem of Undertrials without bail – This problem was mentioned time and again to convince people that it is a grave injustice to grant bail to Salman. The fact is these undertrials can’t get bail as they don’t have money to pay for the bail bond. This is an age old problem and nobody can do anything about it apart from may be paying that money for them. If this problem is to be made the basis of any decision of granting bail, then nobody in India would get bail, ever. Media used the problem of undertrials to the hilt by giving only partial information in a suitable manner and made people get really angry with Salman’s bail.

The truth of compensation and helping the victims - They kept shouting about victims not being compensated. They chose not to mention or hide the fact that after the accident, HC had ordered Salman to pay Rs. 19 lakhs as compensation to the victims which he promptly deposited with the government. (The kin of the deceased did not get compensation as they were fighting among themselves and their share still lies with the govt.) Most importantly, HC instructed Salman not to give any further help or contact the victims as they might get influenced. He was stopped from helping Ravindra Patil for the same reason. Media knew the exact status of compensation and also knew why Salman’s hands were tied yet they kept going on and on about how he has not helped the victims in the last 13 year.

Curious case of Ravindra Patil - Just before the verdict was to be announced, the story making a hero out of Ravindra Patil suddenly appeared out of nowhere and started circulating widely without anybody bothering to verify. The fact is Ravindra Patil changed his initial statement and added the detail of Salman being drunk to his new statement given later. According to some sources, he was indeed under pressure but it pertained to involving Salman khan and not the opposite. Patil’s testimony, his absence from hearings, his running away and his being abandoned by his family are actually a matter of separate investigation and not a black and white story as depicted by the media. Media not only portrayed Ravindra Patil as a hero but also tried to make people believe that Salman was responsible for his death.

How dare you ‘Sympathize with a criminal’? -  Salman got a considerable support and sympathy from many quarters as the sentence looked harsh and dismissive of even the valid defense arguments. People who knew Salman closely obviously expressed their shock and support on twitter. Unfortunately, Abhijeet and Farah Khan Ali tweeted something stupid and the media pounced upon this chance to dismiss all the sympathy from Bollywood as that of heartless, insensitive and selfish people.

If a brother, a friend, a dear colleague or somebody one knows well, likes or respects happens to be in such a situation, anybody will react the same way. But this basic fact was not recognized. Abhijeet and Farah Khan Ali cannot be considered representatives of Bollywood by any parameter yet media insisted it was so. Every sympathetic reaction was pushed in the same category as these two and then the entire fraternity was slammed. Sympathizing with Salman was equated with being indifferent to the accident victims even though these two things are not mutually exclusive. It was made to look like a sin and termed as siding with the ‘criminal’. This also applied to fans and other sympathizers. Anybody who was not showing a vicious glee for Salman’s sentence was shamed and slammed. This was more true of Print and social media.

Bringing up the past gossips – As if the negativity being generated with reference to the case was not enough, they kept talking about unrelated things in his past. These controversies in the past were actually baseless gossip spread by the media in the first place. And whether it was past or the present; the massive charity work that he does through Being Human and even outside of it, was not supposed to be talked about. Whenever the issue of charity was brought up by the fans and the sympathizers, it was dismissed or trivialized by the media people, especially on social media.
In short, Media made use of common man’s ignorance or obvious lack of knowledge about legal proceedings as well as other facts about the case and used it for working up a public opinion against Salman.

Their job was to state things as they are, report in a matter of fact manner and remain impartial even if they were inviting opinions from people. But they made it a point to spin it against Salman and engineer an outrage against him. When it came to reporting about the mood of public, they continued in the same vein and highlighted resentment more than the support and kept the campaign going. This applied to TV as well as the print media and internet. If we add the social media to it, it was nothing short of a witch hunt.

Sadly, even in future; a dispassionate, matter of fact reporting, intelligent debates by real experts and giving opinions in unbiased manner is going to be too much to ask for, as far as Salman’s case is concerned.

Classifications 2014 - BLOCKBUSTER At Last With KICK

The first half of 2014 saw business drop compared to the first half of 2013 to the tune of 8% and no blockbuster film but that has all changed with release of Kick. It has emerged the biggest hit of the year by a distance and first blockbuster of 2014.

The one week share of the film is similar to the lifetime of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani achieved last year and in just one week it is the 6th/7th highest share ever. The second halfof the year has started on a good note with Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania also emerging a hit but nothing in front of the colossus Kick which has strong appreciation all over and has gone into week two with super strong collections.

Kick Set To Be Second Highest Grossing Film Ever After Huge First Week

Kick grossed a huge 14 crore nett on Thursday taking its first week to an extraordinary 155 crore nett. The film has done extraordinary business in the last three days where it was hit in the first four days due to pre Eid. UP, Nizam/Andhra and Gujarat have all record huge numbers in the last three days.

The best performance of the film has come in Rajasthan and Bihar with the latter setting a new record for first week collections as it grossed 4.50 crore nett which is more than the lifetime collections of most big films. Rajasthan was around 12 crore nett.

The film is on course to be the second highest grossing film ever and may even hit the 225 crore nett mark but that will be determined by the business in week two. Dhoom 3 business is out of range as the first week is 10% short of Dhoom 3 business.

I am not born to just become an actor: Salman Khan

Source: Times Of India

Salman Khan, 48, is not just a superstar but also a super human being. He may not know what he has done to be loved so much, but one thing he does know is that he is not here just to be a superstar to make shitloads of money for his family and friends. He realises his responsibility of delivering entertainment to his fans and is working extremely hard for it, despite his health. While he would be happy if Jai Ho breaks existing records, what will make him truly happy is if each human starts giving to three others. In an hour-long conversation, eating his simple fish and rice, he talks to TOI about his dad who is his hero, instances in his life that made him human and how he gives, because he is selfish. Excerpts:

Salim sahab considers you a fakir. Any number of people I meet tell me stories about your generosity. How did you become the human being you are?
There are some childhood memories that stick with you. As a kid, I would get air filled in my cycle in Bandra. I got it filled several times, but did not pay for it till one day when I went 10 years later again on my cycle asking for air. He recognised me and said, "Tumhara 6 rupaiya banta hai.' I had become Salman Khan by that time, but he did not know who I was as he was so into his job. By that time, he was charging 2 to fill the air and he said, now you have to give me 8. I said, 'Haan, deta hoon.' But he said, 'Nahi, cycle chodh jao.' People started gathering and it did not even strike him then why people were stopping to see me. I asked one guy on the street, '100dena zara.' The guy on the street gave me 100 in a second and I gave it to air chacha saying, 'Aaprakho chacha.' He said 'nahi' and promptly returned me 92. That was the first time I learnt my biggest lesson in life that if you have the love, you will always have people to give you the money. I was shooting for a motorcycle commercial at the age of 16, when I realised that I had left an expensive watch in my room at a five-star hotel. I went back after six hours and asked the receptionist. She checked who was on duty at that point and immediately said with conviction, 'Chacha is there on duty today, your watch cannot go anywhere.' I knew from the way she had said that my watch was safe. That's the reputation I want for myself which a guy working in a bathroom of a hotel had made where you knew that if he was on duty, your stuff was safe. I want to be like him who people can blindly trust and believe in. I gave chacha 100 and he said, 'Nahi beta, aap enjoy karo.' That is character. There is one dialogue of my father ki, 'Gopal iss duniya mein lene ke liye nahi, dene ke liye aaya hai.' That got stuck in me. When I was young, I went to buy stuff from Sunil Shetty's shop Mischief, but was short of funds for what I wanted to buy. He is a smart guy and he understood. He took me to his house and gave me these boots with spurs and some shirts and I felt that if I would be a star I would also do this. I don't know what I am doing to deserve the love I am getting. But if I can't make a difference then it is a waste of my life. I am not born to just become an actor and die with shitloads of property or money for my family and friends. I want to do something that will be remembered for centuries. I have the Being Human charitable trust and don't know where I am heading, but I know that I am heading somewhere. It's easier said than done, but people don't help others.

Arbaaz and I used to share a room when we were kids. We stayed next to the sea and there were so many times when we have both taken out bodies from the sea and taken them to the hospital. In the middle of the night, we have gone from one party to another and picked up bodies from the road and deposited them at hospitals before going to our second party. When I was young, we were once three friends on a bike when the bike skid and fell on the highway. So many people zipped past us, but nobody stopped to help. I still remember that feeling of helplessness we had at the time we were lying on the road. One day I was passing by Prabhadevi and I saw a crowd as there was an accident but nobody was willing to pick up the people who were hurt. I also passed by and then thought if the person hurt had been my family or my friend, I would never have forgiven myself. So I helped them and it came from a fear of what if I knew that person. Then this thought was put in my head after seeing one of Mr Asrani's films where he steals cars by putting nails on the road and in one such incident, his mother dies due to her car's tyre being punctured while being taken to a hospital. I have been impacted in my personal life seeing films and so wanted to make a film that would impact people's lives.

Who is your real life hero?
My dad. I am not that typical good guy. I want to drive my car, go to my party, have a good time and don't want to apologise for my position. I don't want to spend shitloads of money to create an aura that I am a humble man. But I want to be like trusted like that hotel wala chacha. My dad is 80 years old but even today he sits outside our house everyday and signs cheques worth 6.5 to 8 lakhs to give away to the needy. He is a very straight man. He is very knowledgeable. My whole problem with my father while growing up was, why was he so right when I was so wrong. I always wanted to prove him wrong even though I always knew he was right, till one day when I decided that I just would go by him. Even if he was wrong 49 times, I knew he would be right 51 times.

Why was the title changed from Mental to Jai Ho?
My name in the film is Jai and Jai Ho is a way of greeting. My father had a problem with Mentaland rightly so, especially coming with me in just the way I would be called out. In this day and age, if a guy is honest, non-corrupt and righteous, he is called mental, as being corrupt and getting corrupted has become a part of us. If a man is honest, we will say, 'don't go to him. He is mental.' My dad then gave Jai Ho which is a bigger and better title. So, the reason for changing it was that our father was not happy. Period. Full stop. He is our father. His experience is immense. Something he has written 40 years ago, Sholay, is still running and people are still going mad about it.

What is the message of Jai Ho?
Normally, when we take something from someone we just say a thank you and think of giving it back. Actually, when someone gives you something it is his need to give. And you don't need to give it back. Instead, you should give it to three more people. I may not need something today, but my kids or my grandchildren will need and at that time somebody will be there to give to them and complete the circle.

There is an aam aadmi dialogue in your trailer. Do your film have anything to do with the AAP?
The aam aadmi dialogue was written two years ago and we have nothing to do with the Aam Aadmi Party. The system can never be corrupt. The people running it can be. Also everybody is not corrupt and there are good and bad people always in every walk of life. A rich man works hard to earn money and pays taxes to ensure he gets back facilities. The same taxes are also supposed to look after the underprivileged in society. But the aam aadmi, in reality, is always sitting with folded hands in front of the person he himself has voted in to look after him. Do you know when I was in jail, I asked the jail authorities, 'Why are you not cleaning the bathrooms?' And they said, 'Because in the monsoons people commit petty crimes to come into jail so that they can stay four months here.' So that means that their lives outside are worse than inside jail. When you are fighting with a corrupt politician, he is using the whole government machinery against you and we are paying for that. They can come into our house and search our houses but we cannot come out and ask, 'Where is my money going? Where are the roads?' And nobody is getting up as everyone is like the cycle chacha — just involved with their lives working hard to make money to make ends meet for their family. We are so scared of the powerful. Every six months, you break and make the same roads. What is it? Is the material sub-standard? Are the people building these roads incompetent? Even roads in the smallest countries we travel to look like marble. There are lots of roads to be done. Why the same roads again and again? How much jhol? Politics is about social work. The elected person is supposed to look after people in his constituency. The film is about one such honest politician Jai who wants to help people.

Will you ever join politics?
I am already a part of it. I am getting so much money for entertaining people and I am giving back through my foundation and that is also a selfish thing as the universe has a way of taking back from you. You reclaim land from the sea, it takes it back. I just want my films to work so that no one loses money, my fans are not disappointed and I can put money in my charitable trust. Despite my health I am giving it my best shot. There was a time when I would take it lightly. But today, I feel some kind of responsibility. There are millions of good-looking people with great bodies. I don't want to be known for that.

Does it give you satisfaction helping others? What gives me satisfaction is that at one stage in my life when I will need help, there will be somebody to give it to me. When I will have nothing there will be that one person who will come and give me that one chance. Sooraj Barjatya gave it to me.

Is Jai Ho a different Salman Khan film?
There is nothing different about it. It's just that there is more anger in it. A common person's anger. I have given my passion and lagan to this film as I don't want to let down my audience who has given me so much love and respect. I want the film to be full paisa vasool and it is my duty that I give 4000 worth for a 400 ticket.
